When you feel Stressed & Overwhelmed…

“You must learn to let go. Release the stress. You were never in control anyway.”

I have an overwhelming amount on my mind today, and with that feeling of being overwhelmed, my stress levels have gone up significantly. And with all the buzz going on in London it’s not improving. These days finding balance might be harder. And often it’s also the fact that with the last couple of months of 2017 we want to accomplish our goals.

Do you know that feeling? It’s all too much and stress is sky-high. We can drown in it and let it rule our lives … or we can practice with it. Learn from it.

So here’s what I’m doing today to deal with my stress:

  1. See the early signs. When the stress levels go up, two things happen: Stress hormones flood your body, and we tend to rush around and jump from one task to another really quickly. So the first step is  to realize that and know that it’s time to pause.
  2. Pause and notice. Stop moving, and notice what’s going on. Just sit still and look inward. Feel the stress in your body. It feels like waves of electricity flowing from head and chest toward the hands and feet. The feeling that the ceiling is crushing over your head..
  3. Notice the need to be in control. Often we feel overwhelmed because the the urge to control everything is massive. But in fact it’s just an illusion. We are never really in control. We make lists, develop routines, have goals and they ultimately help us to feel us more comfortable in an uncertain and uncontrollable world. It is good to notice that we want to be in control of our life, but we should not overact on it.
  4. Give yourself love. As you see the urge to be in control, see also the stress rising … Send love to yourself. You deserve your care and love that it’s ok to feel that way. The body starts to relax and we might feel less anxious because life will treat us well.
  5. Narrow the scope. You can’t to everything at once. Nor can you tick off everything of your To-Do list. A few things per day and you get closer to your goal.
  6. Focus on one thing. We all know that multi-tasking is the productivity killer number 1. So do just one thing at a time and do it right. Try your best and that’s ok.
  7. Relax into the moment. Come back to the present moment and listen into yourself. You will notice that the tension starts do decrease and your muscles relax. Take a few deep breaths and enjoy the moment. Stepping back now and then from the chaos and stress will improve your happiness and you start to appreciate the little things.

I am integrating this little tricks into my daily practice and I hope you’ll find some beauty, joy and appreciation too. 🙂
