Most of us spend a considerable amount of time travelling to work or school from our homes. No matter your chosen mode of transportation, there are habits we can adopt to be more productive during this time that could otherwise be wasted. Especially this past week I really tried to make the most of the time while commuting. Because often I don’t want my time in the train to be absolutely nonsense. Read on for some tips on how to maximise your daily commute.

  1. Network
    Use this time to actively socialise and catch up with your friends. You can do this via social media, or even better, carpool or take public transport together with colleagues who stay nearby. It makes travel time feel so much shorter and is actually more fun.
  2. Socialize
    A solid 30+ minutes of nothing but driving is a great time to finally call your parents or grandparents back or touch base with your old college roommate like you have been meaning to for weeks. These days we are always busy and on the run, but older people really appreciate when you call them and have a chat (like my grandmotherΒ πŸ™‚ )
  3. Observe the world around you
    It’s hard to reset once you’ve hit full creative burnout. Take advantage of your commute to shut off work and switch up your thought processes. Disconnecting yourself from the radio and your phone and take in the world around you. A little time with nothing but your thoughts and the road ahead of you might be all you need to breakthrough on an idea/problem that has been stumping you at work.
  4. Listen to podcasts or audiobooks
    There are several available online, which you can download to your device for free. Try listening to inspirational podcasts or educational audio books relevant to your industry.
  5. Read a book
    Often we don’t take the time to calm down and focus on a book or just get transported in a fictionary world. But why not taking the time and day-dream a bit during your commute.
  6. Exercise
    kill two birds with one stone and get some exercise in during your commute. Consider biking or walking if possible, or if you take public transport, alight one stop before your destination and walk the rest of the way.
  7. Catch some sleep
    You’ve had a long day and sometimes 15 minutes of some shuteye is just what you need in order to make it through that 7PM spin class. Put on your sunnies and relax, just make sure to put a timer on your phone so you don’t miss your stop!

    Great post!! I have a lot of time on my way to work so I normally listen to music, sleep and I also like to contemplate the world! Reading is also a great activity for those hours πŸ™‚
