The word „IMPERFECT“ actually spells „I’M PERFECT.“ Because everyone is perfect in their own imperfect ways. – Unknown
Perfection. It means something different to everyone. For some, it is having a glamorous career and living the single life in a big city. Being able to buy whatever their heart desires. For others, it is being married buying a small house and have children. And still, for others, it is practicing yoga daily, eating a vegan diet, making a six figure salary, traveling all different countries and the list goes on. Despite the differences in definition of ‚perfection‘, many of us share the deep desire to embody the “perfect” image we hold in our minds. And esoecially nowadays, Social Media implies puts a lot of pressure on us because we se so many other ‚perfect‘ lives.
So what happens when we don’t quite live up to that ideal? When it becomes clear that we all have imperfections? When you get your expectations in order, but still don’t feel satisfied? Therefore, it is important not only to make peace with our “imperfections”, but also embrace them and not hide!
Understand why you see yourself as imperfect
If you have a part of yourself you don’t like (most of us have something we don’t like…), try to understand why. Is it because you want to be like someone else, or is it because that’s what society tries to tell us is perfect? Or is it some ways of your behaviour in or tendency to react to situations that you dislike? Grab your journal and write it down or get a cup of coffee with a good friend and talk or take the time to reflect on yourself.
Evaluate if it’s true
There is no doubt that all of our feelings are valid because after all it’s the way we feel. But just because we feel something, doesn’t mean it’s true. For me, I’ve struggled with body image and more than just my height. In fact, it’s still something I’m working on (not easy…). But when looking at the validity of these feelings I see they have very little merit, because it’s just my mind telling me something wrong. Often our perspective on ourselves is totally distorted and not what other people see in us. There is something incredibly freeing about being kind to yourself and realizing that you are fine. Every situation can do with a good dose of perspective.
Embrace Your Flaws
No, you won’t be always the best or the most beautiful or have a lot of money compared to your friends – and that’s okay! Learning to accept our imperfections makes us the unique person that we are. And changing your critical view on yourself into a positive attitude helps. A smile lifts the mood and everything goes easier 🙂
Once you come to terms with your “imperfections” and accept and embrace them, you start to live as your most authentic self. The benefits increase your personal happiness but also you understand others better and people will enjoy your company. Remember, you are in charge of how you view every part of yourself, so have the charm to recognize that “perfection” and “imperfection” is what YOU make it.
How do you deal with the pressure of perfection? Have you learned to embrace your flaws?
